Parenting teenagers raises a host of challenges and opportunities. The developmental task for the adolescent is to separate from his/her parents and form his/her own identity – often through identifying with peers instead of parents. They have much to worry about – from grades, to friends, to what to do about drugs and alcohol, and including their feelings about themselves.
The task of the parent is to balance setting limits to provide safety while offering new freedoms. These opportunities and choices come with increased responsibilities and consequences.
Navigating this journey with your son or daughter –while living your own life – is a daunting thing. While talking with friends can help at times, working with a therapist can provide expert advice along with feedback about how the adult’s choices may reflect his or her own unconscious notions.
Kent meets with individual parents, couples, step-parents and groups of parents. Consultations are typically scheduled for 50 minutes.
